Squirrels are rodents, which are very adaptable to the environmental conditions. Squirrel’s are found in both urban and rural locations. In The Grey Squirrel is not a Native Animal to The United Kingdom.
Distribution
The Grey Squirrel was introduced into England in 1876 from North America and has spread throughout most of mainland England and Wales.
Pest concerns
The most serious damage caused by Grey Squirrels arises when they enter buildings and homes especially in roof spaces where entry is gained by climbing walls/ivy or jumping from nearby trees.
- Chewed structural woodwork as well as furniture and items stored in lofts.
- Chewed electrical wiring (serious risk of fire)
- Torn and displaced loft insulation (they will nest in lofts and use this material to create them)
- Chewed ceilings
- It is not uncommon for them to fall into cold water storage tanks and drown
- Activity in roof spaces can lead to sleep disturbance
- Grey Squirrels have been known to attack people especially if their nests are disturbed or threatened.
- Outside Grey Squirrels will raid bird nests, take fruit and cause damage to lawns. They also cause serious damage t trees stripping bark.
